I started DJing 16 years ago forming a mobile disco with two school friends which we really kicked off when we all left school. Weddings and parties however were not my true calling but they did teach me about crowd control and set programming which I consider to be the two most important factors when playing a set.
At the end of our gap year (1992), we all went our separate ways off to university and I came to Nottingham. Within about 2-3 weeks I had been introduced to how proper DJ's mix and also the phenomena known as house music! If anyone remembers a club called Venus in Nottingham, that is where it all began for me.
One student loan later and a pair of Technics SL-1210's were mine. However I wasn't quite prepared for the long rough ride that is "Learning to mix". With the encouragement and help of my fellow student pals I started to master it and also managed to get some gigs in Nottingham. Many many gigs and a few mix tapes later, with the help of my good friend David Dixon, I managed to land the gig of my career, a closing set at London's Ministry of Sound in June 1995. This will still remain in my memory forever, 2 and a half hours of total bliss and sending 1500 people crazy.
The birth of my son in August of that year however slowed my momentum down as he became a priority over DJing, however this didn't stop me getting gigs with Cream and Miss Moneypenny's the following year.
1997 however was the turning point because I started a residency at the Deluxe club in Nottingham. This was the time that trance music started to take a hold on the dance scene. The defining track for me was a track called Shine by The Space Brothers which always got hammered every week at the club and still holds a special place for me.
Trance music started to grow in popularity after this and by 1998-99, some of the biggest trance anthems had already been born. However the Nottingham trance scene was dead at the time and gigs were few and far between. This led to me to search farther afield and eventually in 2000 I landed a residency at Hartleys in Leicester. This also gave me an insight into the hardhouse scene which although I respect is not the music of choice for me. I did enjoy teaching the hardhouse nutters in Leicester the joy of uplifting trance but from 2am to 8am they liked nothing better than BOSH BOSH BOSH!!!!
Sporadic gigs after that residency ended in 2001 have eventually led me to my favourite and "local" club and in Nottingham called the Venue in Long Eaton. This is where I play at the moment and I thoroughly enjoy the intimate atmosphere that this club brings, the crowd also fully appreciate the uplifting trance which is my perfect music of choice.
Make sure you download a mix (on the download page) so you get to hear what one of my sets might sound like and if you like it and want to come and see me play, check out the upcoming dates section at the top of the page and make sure you sign up for membership to the club by following the link on the links page.
